Grazing is the best way to get omega-3'sHere is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to add some omega-3 fatty acids into your horse’s diet: buy some flaxseeds in bulk and grind them fresh yourself.

The Fresher The Better

Sage is now getting ground organic golden flax seeds daily and after about a month of this she has incredibly soft coat and her mane is growing in thick and silky soft.

I have had her on flaxseed-based supplements before, but it seems like there is nothing like the fresh, pure stuff, and I have never seen such dramatic improvement in her coat.

Natural is Always Best

Pretty soon the grass in her pasture will start to grow, but it has been a lean winter in terms of grazing and natural omegas.

When you take away grazing from horses, you take away their natural source of omega-3′s: grass.

While the best and most natural thing to do is enable your horse to have some grass and grazing, when that is severely restricted or heaven forbid non-existent, you really must give this back to the horse in supplemental form.

Understanding Horse Nutrition

You can research more on the web about omega-3 and 6′s and the need for essential fatty acids, but doesn’t it seem to always boil down to this one thing: keep the horse as close to his natural state as possible, and he will naturally stay healthier. And its less expensive that way!

Stay tuned for future posts on the importance of omega essential fatty acids as well as new money saving tips.
